Week 6

This week we read about two more thinking habits that complement the components of computational thinking: spatial reasoning and a maker’s mindset. These two, perhaps even more than the others, have powerful and clear connections to critical thinking across a range of ages and content.

Read: Chapters 11: Activities That Foster Spatial Reasoning and 12: Making With Code

Reflect: Post your response to one of the prompts below by Monday morning.
The discussion guide found at the back of this text offers two great questions we thought we would pose to our group this week. Please respond to the question of your choice.

The authors pose that spatial thinkers aren’t born; rather, they are made through sufficient experience. What advice in this chapter about “spatializing” your teaching are you likely to try? Why does this kind of activity have merit over other ideas?

OR

The authors offer examples of inventive student work. They also say, “Making isn’t about stuff. It’s not even about the space. More than anything, making is culture and design thinking.” Discuss ways you could infuse the maker spirit into your school program.

Interact: On Monday, read your colleagues' reflections and respond to at least one other post by sharing a comment, insight, or interesting possibility by next Thursday.
