Week 1

Welcome to week one of our Computational Thinking book study. We recognize that many of you are here because you need STEM clock hours but may be wondering how this book will connect to your daily teaching context. Rest assured, we are not suggesting that you all become computer science teachers or run coding clubs after school! However, we believe that if everyone has a better idea about what computational thinking and computer science are, it will help us as educators to promote the kind of thinking our students need to be successful in their future careers.

Read: Preface, Chapter 1: An Introduction to Computer Science, and Chapter 2: Why Kids Should Have the Opportunity to Learn

Reflect: Post your response to the prompt below by Monday morning.

First, begin by briefly introducing yourself -- tell us who you are, what your teaching context is, and your background/previous experience (if any) with computer science. Then, now that you’ve read these first few chapters that outline what CS is and why kids should have the opportunity to learn CS, share your own personal “why” for learning more about CS.

Interact: On Monday, read your colleagues' reflections and respond to at least one other post by sharing a comment, insight, or interesting possibility by next Thursday.
